A time where saving your progress was unheard of, state of the art graphics looked like polygons, and the Mario Bros weren’t even super yet. That wonderful feeling you get when remembering the “glory days” of gaming.
It's a great book filled with nostalgia and inspiration, but is pretty firmly divorced from anything resembling D&D rules-wise.The Best Places to Download Old PC Games For Free Frankly the best part of the book is how it captures the feel of an old school hardback, with it's pastel painting on the cover, to the text flow and interior art. The parts of the book I find most fascinating would be it's town meta-game which I can't really explain, and the world creation ideas. Torchbearer is cool, kinda complex, I'm not sure I can get most of my players to try it as it moves too far away from D&D for their tastes (philistines!), Torchbearer is basically Burning Wheel or Mouse Guard on Steroids. However I'm gonna assume you're asking what's the best retro-clone of an old school RPG, Labyrinth lord and swords and wizardry look great if you want to use rules that are directly related to the original games, if you're looking for something with and Old-School feel, but using modern rules, Dungeon World is pretty much the best thing ever, the basic moves any character can do cover a lot of ground, and for the GM it's very freeing to not have defined rules for every situation and to just wing it, make a ruling, ask a player to roll something, don't say no, etc, it's very good, I encouraged everyone to try it, the rules are creative commons licensed so anyone is free to remix it and redistribute commercially if they like (which also means it's SRD is available free in several places online). The best Old school RPG is BECMI/Rules Cyclopedia Dungeons and Dragons from the 80s, B/X D&D from the early 80s is a close second, tied with AD&D 1e in my mind. I have fun every time I play it, I never feel like the system takes precedence over the game, but rather it supports what we are already doing with the story. It's simple enough that a new player can pick it up in a session. That said it's a very old school feel, so if you want to focus more on leveling up and developing your character on a character sheet, or just telling a story without the fear of death it might not be for you. the intro podcast is a good description of the game and why it's awesome. had great info on the system and a podcast about the game. The system does a great job of creating a Setting that feels dangerous where you actually have to risk life and limb to save your village from certain death. Monsters are all unique, and any module you buy has new monsters you use for that adventure. You're more likely to die in general, but it really adds excitement to the game. It's much grittier, the intro to the game starts you off with 4 zero level characters and you end up playing the one who survives the funnel session. Dungeon World encourages you try whatever you want to accomplish through in game mechanics. r/boardgames - Boardgames that isn't TTRPGs.Hide "Table Troubles"-threads Related Subreddits Hide promo)-threads - (Crowdfunding, Free, Product, Self Promotion) You can discuss these Weekly Free Chat-thread.ĪMA Guide tips if you want to hold an AMA Filters Off-Topic: Book trade, Boardgames, wargames, video games are generally off-topic.Comments deemed abusive may be removed by moderators.
